Kei is in many ways a typical main character for a science-fiction anime show of the 80’s. A hot-headed, quick thinking man with exceptional piloting skills and an eye for the ladies. Despite his tendencies to make himself the center of attention, Kei has a strong sense of justice and commitment to his friends. After a rough start with the crew of the Glomar Kei becomes an integral part of the small community and builds lasting bonds. His quick thinking and superior piloting saves the Glomar on many occasions.
He feels a special kinship with Jahby, a dinosaur creature that, like Kei, is the only member of his race aboard the Glomar. Kei falls for Mimsy and their constant fighting slowly gives way to romance as the series progresses. Although he can’t admit it to himself until she’s gone, Kei develops a strong affection for his companion robot girl Mohm.
When Kei learns of the destiny of tokuitens from his close friend Olson, to give their lives to restore the Earth, he can’t fully face it and gives in to depression. Eventually his sense of justice wins out and he carries though with his fatal responsibility.
