This week I finished The Dungeon Alphabet by Michael Curtis. The 4th printing of this book was released not long ago. This book is a system-free book of ideas for people running players through dungeons in OSR fantasy roleplaying games. It’s a marvelous book and I recommend it to game masters. At 80 pages it’s a light read.
Each letter of the alphabet has one or two entries for things that traditionally are a part of a dungeon crawl (“gold” or “stairs”). Each entry has some text discussing the topic and one or more tables to roll on or choose from. Each table is rich with ideas that add the unexpected and strange to your game. I had assumed a game master should focus on an interesting main villain or set of enemy factions within a dungeon but I had never thought about how fun a set of stairs or a hallway can become with the right ideas fueling them. When planning to run your players through a dungeon you have a lot to gain from reading The Dungeon Alphabet and taking some notes. This a book you will want to keep on your shelf to use again and again. Goodman Games has provided all fantasy gamers a great resource with this book.
