When working on my post on D&D’s Appendix N I thought about other great works whose lists of inspirations are now known.  JRR Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings was inspired by ten books.  This list of inspirational works was not only compiled but also republished by Leaves of Gold Press.  This publisher in Brighton near Melbourne, Australia is making Tolkien’s Bookshelf available.

  • The Song of the Nibelungs (13th century Germanic epic)
  • The Poetic Edda translated by Olive Bray
  • The Story of the Glittering Plain by William Morris (1891)
  • The Red Fairy Book edited by Andrew Lang
  • The Princess and the Goblin by George MacDonald (1872)
  • The Saga of Eric Brighteyes by H. Rider Haggard (1890)
  • The Dragon Ouroboros by Eric Rucker Eddison (1922)
  • The Book of Wonder and The Last Book of Wonder by Lord Dunsany (1912)
  • The Story of King Arthur and His Knights by Howard Pyle
  • Grimms’ Fairytales
