Policy on "Hotlinking"

Post by Tachyon » Sat May 08, 2004 3:21 am

Today (May/7/04) Gears Online put a system in place to prevent hotlinking. "Hotlinking" is using HTML code to display an image from Gears Online on another site. Visitors to that other site would not know the image was being direct-linked unless they right click on the image and look at the "properties" (which most people don't do).

Gears Online's policy on hotlinking is it's bad. We will not use hotlinked images here and we will do all we can to prevent other sites from hotlinking to our images. People are still able to right click on images and save copies to their own hard drives. If people want to build their own private, offline image collections that's fine with us. However, if they take those copied images and use them on a Web site, that's bad.

If you have any questions or comments on this policy, feel free to post in the Site Feedback forum.
If you don't like the news then go make some of your own.
