Eras of Anime?

Post by Tachyon » Fri Apr 17, 2009 8:53 pm

One exercise I sometimes find fun is to step back and try to sum up the high points of the anime coming out of certain decades. What was good about the 70's sci-fi anime? The 80s, 90s and 00s? What were the strengths of each decade? I am referring mainly to mecha and sci-fi anime here.

For me, the 70s was a time of optimism and fun. The super robot shows had hot-blooded action, loads of fun and a very upbeat perspective.

The 80s was a fascinating time of innovation and complexity. Many of the realistic robot shows had detailed, fully fleshed-out sci-fi worlds and lots of space travel. So many stories took place in settings where mankind lived on countless planets. Storylines were more complex and intriguing.

Summing up the 90s and 00s is more difficult for me. Animation techniques improved but that's not what I'm trying to focus on. What would everyone say are the strengths of those 2 decades?

I'm thinking something like this, close enough....

90s strengths: human machine Interaction, personal emotion

00s strengths: high in spirit again, openly express.

Personal emotion is heavy through the nineties. I was thinking of Record of Lodoss War. Solid anime, really needed a far better sequel (why can't animes stay on track and make GOOD sequels?!), but very heavy on the emotional side.

00's...hmm. Dunno. Hard to say really as I've taken a nosedive as far as keeping up with current anime.I think the stories are more experimental, fewer mecha centric with a high degree of unusual plotpoints and boundary pushing morals. Though this is just a hunch as I'm way underviewed.

I like this post! :D
Hence that's the reason why I created my blog site. For this purpose.
And many people in this day and age, have no idea how these series have trekking through that phase of 'evolution' before Gundam became a symbol for Japan's pride in robotics industry.
