Hmm....Dayum, I won't be able to paint for a while. My compressor decided to tap out on me right when I was about to start painting. It was working perfectly fine yesterday without any signs of it braking down. Now I have to look into getting another compressor...

EDIT: I opened up the compressor and found the problem. Now it's working fine so I can continue working on my kit.

Hey everybody!

I've been away for awhile, mostly preoccupied with family life, the occasional cosplay, and semi-severe physical injuries (for details see http://www.flickr.com/photos/24999396@N00/).

This year preparing for convention season I realized that I should start actively presenting instead of passively attending.

Stuff is in the works for me to put on a "how to" on model building for kids at ACen in Chicago this coming May, and a "how to" for grown-ups there too. Strictly IP, mostly basics with a little modding for added interest.

I've been heavily documenting my last month of building work and I started a blog to show off some of my efforts.

What brand and type of paint and thinner do you use for the parts we're seeing here?

And what primer do you have underneath?

I'm always chasing after info about what products people use when they paint because this seems like the hardest aspect of kit building to get precise information about. Sometimes it seems like there are as many ways of painting as there are individual builders.

I just recently started using Mr. Color Thinner in about a 4 to 1 ratio with Mr. Color lacquers in my airbrush and discovered that it flows much more freely than the Sunnyside lacquer thinner I've used successfully for years in bristle brush painting.

That Sunnyside stuff just evaporates way too fast for airbrushing (it does a nice job cleaning out my airbrush, though). I'm going to try adding Mr Retarder to it sometime soon in the hope that it will provide a long-lasting and cost effective solution.

Hi Jim,

Like you, I'm using Mr.Color lacquer for painting. For priming I use Mr.Surfacer. I find that adding Mr.Retarder Mild is very effective when you want to achieve a smoother and glossier finish. For me, it's necessary to add a few drops before airbrushing. It'll also be helpful when the weather heats up.

Here's something new to me, detailing. I used Tamiya Enamel Black for the wash. I actually had to stripped the waist because the spine had no lines to get any kind of a good wash going. So, with the help of a mini saw I was able to scribe new lines on the spine.

Everybody were complaining about this Soft Vinyl figure. So I took it out of the showcase this weekend for putty and sanding again.

Somehow caught a modeling hangover. I have to force myself in building models lately.So I try to inspire myself with some painting. The mask after the first few dry-brushing layers.
