FSS School Designs and Gears Online

Post by Tachyon » Sun Mar 04, 2007 11:51 pm

The [kind of] new book FSS School Designs arrived yesterday. I wish to thank Rubel Colus for assisting me in buying it. It's quite small measuring only 7 3/16 inches tall and 4 3/16 inches wide.

It contains 16 new color images that are reproduced as line art images making it 32 in all. I'd be happy to scan the images for Gears Online but I would like to get some help from one or more FSS fans with this project. There are 9 logo images that look like they belong to different schools/academies. The girls shown wearing the school uniforms seem to be known FSS characters in their younger years. I think these schools exist in the Joker Galaxy, not modern-day Earth.

Please add posts to this thread with any information you have on this book.

The 9 School names:
グリース王立内宮高等学校
典星舎
メサ•ルミナス学園
フィルモア帝国帝国近衛兵学校
騎士高等学校ベイ•ポイント
ウィンド高等学校
バルチック•アカデミー
ハスハント国立スバース宮殿女学院
ガスーがル連邦国立パラいア高校

Would anyone like to translate the school names? Come on, it'll be fun!

I've scanned the 9 school emblems and the 16 color character images. The character images need a little more clean up and they'll be done.

9. ガスーがル連邦国立パラいア高校
1. Grees Royal Inner-Palace High School
2. I have no clue what that means. Literally Law-Star-House
3. Mesa - Luminas School (gakuen)
4. Filmore Empire Imperial Guard School (gakko)
5. Knight High School Bay Point
6. Windo High School
7. Barutiku (Baltic?) Academy
8. Hathhant National Svas Palace Girls High School (joshi gakuen) *another form of gakuen
9. Gasgaru Union National Parairu(Note 3) High School (koko)

Note 1: gakuen, gakko are different ways to say school, kinda like Blah Academy, ACME Institution etc.
Note 2: koko is a short hand for high school. From the full word 等学 and only take the red ones.
Note 3: I think that's spelled wrong. If you typed it yourself, would you mind double checking it Tachyon?
Note 4: I'd originally missed no 6 and added it. It says Windo, but that's also how Japanese people spell Windows, the OS from Microsoft.

#9 is spelled just like it is on page 44 of the F.S.S. School Designs book. Wait! I did make a typo. The 2nd "ga" in ガスーガル was typed as hiragana instead of katakana. Sorry, everyone! This is added below in smaller characters:
ガスーガルれんぽうこくりつパライアこうこう

Below that is:
所在地: デルタ•ベルン星 AKD
ガスーガル連邦

学科等: 普通科、 家政科、 工業科

Would you be able to let me take a look at the scanned page? ^^;;
If you don't want to show it to everybody, maybe through PM?

Pariah.

The kanji 典 can also mean compendium or dormitory, while 舎 is better translated as dormitory in this context. Basically, it is a place where the elite of the divers (on a galaxywide scale) stay and receive their education, hence the name.

Don't really know what a proper translated name would be though. None of the translations I have would capture the 'feel' of the name.

Thats damned cool for a training facility for Divers.

Sweetness.

Yeah, it's going up. All images are cleaned up and the school names have been translated well enough for me to have something to work with. I'm going to "interpret" the rough translations and come up with my own English versions of the schools' names. I will be open to criticism on how to revise them.

I've got a fiendish load of work from my office to go through this weekend. The new version of our main software product will be out in a month and the Web site needs to be basically re-written. Once I can get out from under the pile of tasks on my desk I'll add the mortar headd images and School Designs material to the Web site and the ships from Gall Force Eternal Story.

典 is listed on page 1199 of NTC's New Japanese-English Character Dictionary (Jack Halpern 1993 ISBN: 0-8442-8434-3).
Standard Work - Canon
1) [original meaning] standard work of reference or scholarship
a) reference book, dictionary, encyclopedia
b) classics, scriptures

2) a) (standard code of laws) canon, code, law, rule, principle
b) (standard of authority or evaluation) canon, model, standard, authority

3) formal ceremony, celebration

4) decent, decorous, seemly, classic

5) offering

6)be in charge of, supervise

7) used phonetically for ten or den
I will be looking at this page as I try to puzzle out a name for Ten-Sei-Sha.
