Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), shows laser plasma technology making a flashpoint in the air in this long exposure image at a research institute in Tsukuba, north of Tokyo. The AIST succeeded in the experimental fabrication of the device displaying 'real 3D images' which consist of dot arrays in space where there is nothing but air.

And many scientists once thought this would be impossible.

Shows how much they know!

I'm not enthusiastic about the whole... hydrogen plasma ignition part. That's not so much a "hologram" as it is "burning dots of superhot light into the air". Potentially dangerous much? :P

Still. neato.

Did you watch the movie?

The demonstrator stuck his hand in it to move the virtual cursor with his finger with no ill effects...

Hmmmm...

So, the interfaces in "Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within" and "Minority Report" aren't as far-fetched as I thought.

Man, that would make computing fun! Not to mention what this would do to 3D modeling and animation - virtual clay, anyone?
