My view on the ZZ Gundam Issue

Post by Godaiger » Wed Nov 29, 2006 10:32 pm

ZZ Gundam has for years been a target of critism by serious Gundam fans, true its not as good as MSG, Zeta or V, however I kinda like it for trying to be different than the other MSG shows.

Contrast to what many Gundam fans believe, Tomino wasn't put in charge the storyline midway of ZZ, he was working since it started, as part of Tomino's tendencies to follow up a tragedy with a comedy, this nominal sequel to Zeta Gundam struck a much lighter, often comical, tone, in contrast to its predecessor's brooding melodrama, which is why they used Anime Ja Nai (It's Not Anime) as the first opening for it reflected the campiness of the first half of the series. The second half of the series does return to a more serious tone while sporting a more somber opening theme song.

A lot of serious Gundam fans hate the main character Jaudu Ashta (mostly in the first half), not only because he was sort of a goofball in the begining but because he wasn't the "Typical" Gundam hero like Amuro Ray or Camile Bidan, come on just because he didn't start out as a tragic character doesn't make him a lousy Gundam character, and a lot of fans agree with me, Jaudu was ranked 20 of the MSG Males Rank in The monthly Gundam power rankings in Gundam Ace in like 2003 or 2004. True he's not as popular as characters like Char, Amuro or Camile but he's still popular and Tomino himself once said he considered Jaudu as the strongest Newtype. I prefer Jaudu over Kira (sorry SEED fans, I kinda like SEED).

Now about the whole Zeta movies rectoning ZZ out of continuity, I don't consider it canon not just because it recton ZZ but because I heard it also retconned Char's Counterattack out of continuity.

I'd really like to join this discussion but I haven't seen Gundam ZZ or the 3 new Z Gundam movies. Hopefully I will see them someday!

I'm with you Godaiger, I enjoyed ZZ thoroughly. Judau is one of my favorite Gundam heroes too.

Cosgrove: Don't you mean the world?
Dr. Mystico: I meant the world, yes. What did I say? Cleveland? Oh, I *always* do that!

I didnt find ZZ to be too bad, though there are some things that should've been left out of the story (Moon Moon... :x). I definately rank this way above GS or GSD.

zz gundam is fine for me as a original gundam story. I really like all the MS designs, and the main character he is the first gundam pilot is not relate to any minitary backgrounds.
The only thing that disapoint me about the zz gundam is there are too many goddamm! female MS pilots, they are really make the whole war story like a BIG joke. I belive for the reason way all gundam fans watch gundam is the robots and the tie war stories, not the stupid girls running around in the battle.
original gundam series rule.

You know a lot of anti-ZZ fans keep saying how unpopular Jaudu is and how its ratings were medicore which isn't really true, ZZ scored huge ratings and Jaudu was ranked among the top 20 MS males in several Gundam rankings for quite a while. I guess that's saying something to contredict what anti-ZZ folks keep saying.

Up with ZIII, down with ZZ.

I just got around to seeing the third Zeta movie -and I thought the ending was great. Part of the reason I liked it was the way it went against ZZ's story. Yeah I'm a ZZ hater...
I don't mind Jude so much, it's just that his struggle isn't very interesting. Rakkon is way more interesting, and he's just the bad guy of the week really. Or even the Elpeo Pool (Puru?) clones where better.
Worst of all is that Jude's big triumph at the end of the show was that he happens to be hanging out when Haman commits suicide.
ZZ even ranks below the new "what if a boy band had giant robots?" Gundam shows.

Heh, sorry to rant... The Zeta III is awesome though! Love the new art for the interior of the Gripps! And, the character art for Haman is really nice!

I've seen MOST of ZZ Gundam (missed a few of the early eps), and rather liked the series. It was campy... very much so too. However, I grew up watching the old school campy sci-fi thanks to my dad, so I do like the stuff. ZZ having all the camp didn't bother me at all.

Is it the same calibur of Zeta? I don't think so... and it probably made a few decisions that shouldn't have been made.

Most of the flaming it gets, as I've seen, comes from the hardcore Gundam fans who see it as a legitimate war story as opposed to despite it's realism at times, a sci-fi franchise.

I loved it when Jaudu kicked Wong's butt in one episode.

While I enjoyed ZZ, I think that they should have struck a balance between the light hearted stuff and the serious moments. from what I have seen of Metal Armor Dragonar, they did just that and it worked. If they had done with ZZ what they did with Dragonar, ZZ would be remembered alot more fondly by gundam fans as a whole.

I think the new Zeta movies over ride ZZ, but it won't over ride Char's Counterattack. In Char's Counterattack there was no mention to what happened to Haman and the Axis asteroid.

In Char's speech in CCA he only mentions Hamans name but not her Neo Zeon, so he could be refering to her appearance in Zeta. In ZZ Neo Zeon was defeated leaving the Axis Astroid for the federation to sell to Char. While in the Zeta movies (spoiler)

Code: Select all

Haman and her entire fleet abandons Axis and leaves the Earth Sphere leaving Mineava behind on earth as well.

This would also mean Axis was left for the federation to sell to Char in CCA.
