What are some good FFS artbooks to use as reference

Post by Xenoex » Mon Jun 04, 2007 7:29 am

Hi again fellas,

I am interested in buying some FSS artbooks to use as reference material when building the model kits. I was wondering if there are any particularly good ones you would recommend me to get?

Prefably, I'd like 2 books, one concentrates on the lineart from the manga/cartoon and the other on actual photos of models and sculptures. Or even better, if there is one book that encompasses both those aspects of FSS design.

I have done some searching on YJ, and found these books:
lineart:
http://page17.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/v16272456
http://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/81765970
http://page2.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/b69607010

models:
http://page7.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/g57284953

If anybody owns those books, can they give a quick opinion on whether they'd make good reference material? I'm not interested in characters, just Mortar Headd designs/drawings/photos.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you!

Chronicle is very good for line art, extensive coverage but small format. Maybe not so good for modeling reference because of small size, but I'm glad to own a copy :) If you can't get Knight Flags then this might be an okay one to buy. Knight Flags: http://www.hlj.com/product/TYP011

Don't have the second one, but I think it's a pretty slim volume. Old too.

I keep thinking about getting a copy of Fatima someday, but again it's a pretty slim volume. Also kind of old.

Never saw that one on the models, but I have these and they are absolute treasures (and they're in stock as of this writing):

I don't work for hlj, but I do recommend their service.

I think it depends which MH(s) you are working on. For newer kits, Knight Flags and Smoke Walls would be very helpful.

Factorys 01-04 was rather disappointing...I mean, one page per MH kit just isn't enough, and some of the pictures were crap. For example, LED V3 and Patraqushie Mirage V3 each had one picture taken from the side...Also, pretty much all the pictures of the MHs were taken from the Toyspress web site.

I've talked a bit about factorys 2007 here :
http://www.gearsonline.net/forums/viewt ... 3777#13777

2007 is probably better than the 01-04 (cuz' it has 40 or so pages about building the Akira Tani's 1/144 300 parts KOG, great if you intend to build it, kinda useless if you don't), but could still be improved. The old factorys (from 1990 or something) has a certain "feel" that those 2 don't have. In fact while not presented as "real" machines, the kits were scenarised a bit, and overall it has more uh... "class" ? than just kits on a white background.

There's also MH Saga (is it in one of those auctions ?), supposed to be a large book on kits only, but I never had an occasion to take a look at it. Pops-up on ebay sometimes.

Chronicle 2007 has a lot of infos but it's a small format, so with 4 or 6 pictures per page it's not really the best for reference.

If you're into scratch building and casting and such, though, that ~40 pages of detailed parts images and fitting diagrams could be really valuable, especially since it's from Akira "Genius" Tani. The image quality and the diagrams are amazing, and the engineering of that kit is incredible.

It's good in terms of number of content. The thickness of this book is about the same as a HobbyJapan magazine. However, I don't think it would be much of a help if you're building newer MH kits. This book was released around 1993(?), so it features mostly the much older kits that are not commonly seen today. Some of the better kits from this book were early works from WSC such as the KOG, Bang and Schpeltor. Volks 1/35 KOG and LED are also included. It's also got a nice collection of pictures of various dioramas.

MH Saga is great if you are interested in older kits. Many of these older kits are hard to find now, and if they are being sold new by e2046 or another recaster they are usually poor quality (often recast of a recast of a recast...). Because they are not readily available you don't often see them on modelling sites. So to be able to see them nicely painted in MH Saga is great.
