Google Ads

I'm considering using Google ads on some pages to help defray the server costs for Gears Online.

The contribute by Paypal thing didn't work. One guy gave $20 a few years back and that was it.

I'm open to hearing people's ideas on this.

well, personally I think online ads are the worst thing inflicted upon humanity since the bubonic plague, but you gotta do what you gotta do

if you try to stay away from those bloody pop-up ads I don’t think people would mind that much.

Google ads are ok, well they'r emostly transluscent and no pop-up or flashy-colors...
On the other hand sometimes you click on them cuz' you forget about them...

But yup', google ads might be a good option, I'm still and always will be surprised to see it works though. I never ever clicked on any of these, and rarely ever look at what they say...

Go ahead, Tachyon. While my connection speed is snailish, I won't care much for ads if it help you.

I think its a good idea (as long as no popups). Google ads are not too irritating.

do u need us to click on the ads to get some funds? if so, I'd gladly click several times each time i visit. :twisted:

Google ads are small.
And doesn't have popups.
However the sites that link from google may have popups.

I support the idea.
I'll try to click ad links when I visit.

After discussing things with my wife I've decided to use Google Ads for 2 months and see how things go. If they make less than $10 per month or hurt site traffic I will drop them. If they make $10 or more per month I will show the figures to my wife and she will help me rearrange my schedule so that I have more time to work on new content for Gears Online.

Up until now my wife hasn't been too sure of this site as it takes money out of our budget every month. But if it starts helping with its own costs she'll feel better about me working on it.

So, in summary, the Google Ads aren't about making money. They're about giving me more time to add content to Gears Online. Once they're up I would appreciate help from everyone clicking on the ads every now and then to help with server expenses.

suggest to put it perhaps on the top of the message board too?

It's an interesting idea. I'll consider putting them on the message board when I get some time. I was wondering how it would affect our little community.

They're quite small and non itrusive.
I went around and clicked.

What are the terms for the ads?
Do we have to click and let the pages completely load, or is just the click good enough?
Is there any limit on hits from a single ip address?

Tell us what'd be the most effective way to get ad revenue.

Thank you to all interested in helping Gears Online cover its monthly server costs. Gears Online will probably have to upgrade its bandwidth soon so covering expenses is something we need to keep in mind.

I will try to find time this week to properly place Google Ads at the top of the message board.

How the Ads Work:
The ads at the top of a page pay to Gears Online when you click on one and let the resulting page finish loading. The ads on the left side of a page (below the navigation menu choices) are Link Units. They take you to a Google page where 10 advertiser links are displayed. Gears Online sees revenue when you click on a link in that list of 10 and wait for the resulting page to finish loading.

Google is trying to stop "click farms" and other abuses so if you'd like to help Gears Online, please click on no more than 5 advertiser links in a day (besides, you've got better things to do

).

UPDATE:

I was trying to use image ads here in the message board but they aren't loading properly. I'll go back to text ads even though they were all for car parts. We can see if they slow down the message board or not.
