Heika.net Situation

Post by Tachyon » Fri Oct 08, 2004 10:42 pm

How is the Heika.net situation going? I haven't heard anything in a while. Has WaxTrax decided on a new location? Has David Colton had much to say lately?

I think its safe to say the board is pretty dead, posts have continually vanished into thin air

IMO it may be better to officialize the death (and rebirth ?^^) of WaxTrax rather than seeing an error 404 page one day after all posts disappeared and nobody posted for a while.
David Colton may have the final word on WaxTrax, let a disclaimer for a few weeks like "Waxtrax is now closed, thanks blablablah for all the years etc etc, for more FSS discussion go to <<another official place>>"

But to do this we need another official place :P . If at first I prefered an FSS only place, I'm now well here, it's quite comfortable *strech out his legs on the table*.
So I really have no preference on what this official place may be, but IMO it would not be good if this small FSS active community had to split between several messageboards (and I'm already spending wayyyy too much time on several messageboard huhu^^).

And check with David if Waxtrax could be redirected somewhere else, if he wants to keep heika online or not, or to be host somewhere else, redirected somewhere else, let the content be reused on other FSS site or whatever. Maybe we should invite him to post here, as there's a possibility to post as guest user, well if he's got the time to of course^^.

David has already posted an opinion on this here:

http://waxtrax.heika.net/WB/default.asp ... 509&fid=35

He doesn't mind carrying the Heika name over to someplace else, but he can't maintain Heika as it is now. Its simply a matter of time before the messages dissapear entirely.

I can make a subdomain for no additional cost to anyone. It would look like:
http :// waxtrax.gearsonline.net
or
http :// heika.gearsonline.net

For $10 per month I could set up www .heika .net with my host company. However, I'm tight on money these days so it would have to be done by donations. I can accept funds via PayPal.

That's what I can do. What does everyone want to do?

If we want to resolve this issue soon we can discuss it, make a decision and ask David Colton to endorse it. Or, if everyone's happy, we can let things continue as they are now. I'm in no hurry and I'm very happy to have WaxTrax people here.

I'm still looking into the install on a dedicated server. I have already been given approval by David but I just am swamped at work. I have been working ten hour days for the last month and will be working through last and this weekend. As soon as that slows down I will see about setting up the server to take the PHPBB software. (IT looks easy but it couldn't possibly be that easy. Could it?)

I disagree w/ the extra domain issue. Anything that impose extra cost to Gear is not good.

It's a web site w/ a name, that's all. I can sit here comfortably, and extra money for that extra sub-domain business is a waste of money.

What David should do, if he wants to gather back the traffic of Waxtrax, is to get some NEW ISP other than the current ISP, to host waxtrax, and install a new BBS software on it.

But I'm guessing he doesn't have the time to do it, although the money isn't much as far as ISP rental disk space is concerned.
