Winged Mess - defining face and neck design

The name of this machine mess - driven only by the king - is "Crista-galli"

The "Sphenoid Knights"

They are the royal guardian mech that only exists in a very limited number. Two are to be by the machine mess sides at all time. At important times, they raise their "crest" at the forehead. The long spear at the back of the head indicates their equal status with the L.E.D mirage.

Some update, and hope this will turn out to be a great year. More and better to come (and not just rough sketches  ).

Long time no see. .. ... These are designs based on individual soldier exoskeleton on average 8.5 feet tall. I call them "Expensive Soldiers". They are soldier platforms capable of carrying a large selection of weapon load and firepower, as well as can climb vertical planes. the Prosthetic limbs have speedy reflexes ranging in milli-second span.

Long time no see again... ... Yf-19 re-stylized. I call it YF-19B as a non-transformable fighter that could be built in real life.

... ... And, where have I been? I was painting fashion girls, I want to be a portrait/figure artist!

Interesting YF-19. It looks similar to the concept art Kawamori created when he was brainstorming the original.

Mr. March, long time no see. Kudos to your macross manual website. I learned a lot just by looking at Kawamori's line art/design sketch. His designs of Yf-19 and Yf-21 are indeed slick and have that pizazz, but unfortunately I feel are lost in translation (YF-19 particularly so) by the dull Hasegawa interpretation (1/72 scale kits). Just by the looks, the aerodynamics of the their designs won't work in real life, because they look more like rockets with fat-ass boosters than airplanes that take advantages of air flow. Look at the design of SU-27, F-14, F-15, Rafale, Concorde, and the new J-10 Chinese fighter... all somehow incorporate a flowing curve into their frame. They look as if they can really glide. Now that's flying.

BTW, I just uncovered a bunch of old sketches of Yf-19 and Yf-21 (my interpretation). These are not really for artwork display, but more like concept sketches in an attempt to capture the *feel* of the design. Then, I had wanted to scratchbuild model kits /toys according to these re-designs.

Here we go. Please forgive me for hi-jacking my own thread.

Keep in mind that the Valkyries have both out-of-universe and in-universe reasons for their airframe design. Out of universe, the Valkyries have to be designed by Kawamori to transform into robots and very stylized, cool looking robots at that. In universe, the Valkyries are aerospace craft designed for both operation in an atmosphere and in space, meaning they can't have it all. The realities of operating in a vacuum will demand these craft suffer various compromises upon their design. Digressing, nice concept art :)
