GearsBlog<\/a> gives me a place to share my thoughts on those but recently my interest in fantasy has been reawakened. Books written before 1980 often blur the line between fantasy and science-fiction (I won’t disagree with those who claim fantasy and sci-fi are actually sub-genres of fantastic fiction) but most of them fit into one or the other without much difficulty. The Meandering Path will offer me a spot to weigh in on fantasy stories.<\/p>\nThe recently renewed interest in Gary Gygax’ Appendix N list has launched many discussions on the relationship between genre fiction and roleplaying games. More and more people are starting to realize how good stories can not only give them ideas to bring to the gaming table but open their eyes to new play styles that can take their games in entirely new directions. Exploring this dynamic along with the rest of the online community will be a lot of fun.<\/p>\n
Another topic I plan to grapple with is the expanding appeal of Dungeons & Dragons in recent years. If indications are true fantasy roleplaying is nearing mainstream awareness and this will have several consequences for the games we love.<\/p>\n
Although I have no intentions of making this blog autobiographical I want to avoid the traditional conceit of journalists who try to convince their readers that the journalist can become invisible and have no influence on what is reported. With that in mind I’ll share a little of my own background. My interest in fantasy fiction started quite young when my father read to me. He kept a large shelf of books which I rifled through during my grade school years. At the age of 8 I found Gamma World and 1st edition Dungeons & Dragons books at a friend’s house. The illustrations drew me in and the notion that I could build my own fantastic narratives kept me there. When I married I put RPG books down for a while but now that my children are a little older I’m finding my way back to the hobby.<\/p>\n
